CBD Drug Test Guide: Panels, Detection Windows & More
Evidence-based answer reviewed against SAMHSA cutoffs and FDA assay documentation · Updated August 2026
Quick answer: Non-intoxicating cannabinoid — not included on the federal 5-panel. Urine detects it roughly CBD itself: not tested; contaminating THC could register 3+ days; hair archives ~90 days; saliva and blood track only recent use. CBD itself is never screened. Tests look only for THC-COOH (50 ng/mL initial urine).
Overview
This guide covers everything verifiable about how testing handles CBD (cannabidiol) (also searched as: hemp, cannabidiol, gummies): which panels include it, detection windows across specimens, cutoff levels, false-positive risks, and legitimate prescription handling.
Panel membership
| Panel | CBD status |
|---|---|
| 5-Panel | ❌ Not included |
| 10-Panel | ❌ Not included |
| 12-Panel | ❌ Not included |
| DOT 5-panel (safety-sensitive) | ❌ Not included |
Detection windows
| Test type | Typical CBD detection window |
|---|---|
| Urine | cbd: CBD itself: not tested; contaminating THC could register 3+ days |
| Saliva (Mouth Swab) | cbd: not tested |
| Hair Follicles | not tested |
| Blood | cbd: not tested |
Cutoff levels
CBD itself is never screened. Tests look only for THC-COOH (50 ng/mL initial urine).
Cutoffs exist to separate real use from noise — dietary exposure, passive contact and legacy medications stay below them by design. Screen-above-cutoff results still require mass-spec confirmation before reporting.
Deep-dive facts
No workplace panel screens for CBD. The molecule labs search for is THC-COOH, the metabolite of intoxicating THC — CBD is chemically distinct and does not convert into THC-COOH in amounts that matter.
The practical risk is contamination. FDA surveys have repeatedly found a meaningful share of retail CBD oils and gummies contain more THC than the label admits. Regular use of a mislabeled full-spectrum product can slowly accumulate enough THC-COOH to trip a screen.
Isolate-labeled products ('pure CBD', '0.0% THC') are lower-risk than full-spectrum, but third-party certificate-of-analysis testing is the only real assurance.
If you take physician-prescribed pharmaceutical-grade CBD (purified CBD) or use CBD medically, tell the Medical Review Officer during the result-review call; documentation protects legitimate use.
False positives & cross-reactivity
- Mislabeled CBD products containing undeclared THC cause genuine THC positives — these are true positives for THC, not assay errors.
- Pure CBD has no documented cross-reactivity with THC immunoassays.
| Screen flagged | Documented cross-reactants (immunoassay tier only) |
|---|---|
| Amphetamines | Bupropion (bupropion), trazodone, phentermine, pseudoephedrine, labetalol, promethazine, methylphenidate |
| PCP | Dextromethorphan (dextromethorphan cough syrup), diphenhydramine (diphenhydramine), doxylamine (multi-symptom cold remedies), tramadol, venlafaxine (venlafaxine), ketamine |
| Opiates | Poppy seeds (true positive), quinine, dextromethorphan, ofloxacin/levofloxacin, rifampin |
| Benzodiazepines | Sertraline (sertraline), oxaprozin (case reports) |
| Methadone | Diphenhydramine, doxylamine, verapamil, quetiapine (quetiapine), clomipramine |
| Tricyclics (TCA) | Cyclobenzaprine (cyclobenzaprine), hydroxyzine, carbamazepine, diphenhydramine |
| Cannabinoids (THC) | Efavirenz, pantoprazole (isolated reports); dronabinol/dronabinol = true positive |
Legal status note
Hemp-derived CBD (<0.3% delta-9 THC) is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill; marijuana-derived CBD follows state marijuana law.

How accurate are drug tests?
Lab-based immunoassay screens agree with confirmation testing ~97% of the time; confirmed GC–MS results are considered definitive. Home kits trade legal defensibility for convenience.
Do prescriptions count against me?
No — verified prescriptions report as negative through the Medical Review Officer. Declare medications at collection and answer the follow-up call.
